5 Ways Artificial Intelligence Will Advance The Future Of Work

February 11, 2019

According to the World Economic Forum’s “The Future of Jobs” report, advances in artificial intelligence (AI) will positively impact business growth through 2022. While all industries will feel the effects, five of the industries surveyed in the report listed AI as one of the top three trends driving growth in their industry: automotive, aerospace, supply chain and transport; consumer; energy utilities and technologies; global health and healthcare; and professional services.

We know AI will affect the future of work. But how? Read on to learn five of the ways.

More Creativity

With algorithms to do the calculations, it frees up humans to participate in more creative tasks. A recent report by Adobe found the majority of creatives (artists, designers, motion graphics specialists and illustrators) were not threatened by machine learning. In fact, they cited artificial intelligence as an opportunity to take over “tedious, uncreative” tasks, leaving more time for brainstorming and the creative process.

Better Hiring

Using artificial intelligence for recruitment certainly makes the hiring process more efficient. It’s already helping recruitment professionals pair qualified candidates with job opportunities and screen hoards of resumes to focus the candidate pool. Some recruitment technologies have set out to improve the diversity of hiring by accounting for human bias in the hiring process. These tools correct bias in job descriptions and hide personally identifiable information in applications, so recruiters make a decision based on qualifications and experience alone.

Safer Workplaces

Machine intelligence has long been a part of the manufacturing industry with its use of assembly line robots. This eliminates the risk of humans being hurt on the job in a highly mechanical environment. Additionally, if robots are able to perform the most dangerous jobs, this allows humans to perform safer careers. As artificial intelligence technology develops rapidly, more industries are finding its use to alert workers of potentially hazardous situations so they can rectify and avoid them.

Higher Employee Engagement

Surveys and feedback are a piece of any successful employee engagement program. But, sometimes, companies don’t quite know how to leverage the data they collect. Or employees get annoyed by the frequency of check-ins and there’s lack of participation. Machine learning is stepping in to make this process seamless. Frequent pulse surveys are less burden on respondents and provide decision-makers with insight into trends. Natural language processing can identify negative sentiments as they start to swirl so they can be dealt with before they get out of hand. And, recognition programs, complete with alerts and reminders, are making their way on to the scene and encouraging more positive engagement and praise among teams.

More Effective Workplace Learning Programs

Machine intelligence is making for more personalized workplace learning programs. The material can be customized based on the learners real-time understanding and knowledge of the topic. The curriculum can be tailored –sped up or slowed down or more in-depth or less – depending on how the student is answering test questions and progressing in the program. This approach may be especially helpful during onboarding so the new hire is fully prepared to start work once their training program is complete. If someone can be ramped up in three days instead of 10, it can have a major impact on the team’s productivity.
