Disruption: All Employers Are Tech Employers

Disruption: All Employers Are Tech Employers

June 27, 2019

The early tech start-ups began to emerge in Silicon Valley in the ‘60s, but since the technology boom in the ‘90s, there are thousands more. When any of these companies get started, they focus their hiring on tech positions. Makes sense because they need to build their technology before anything else. But as this space matures, tech companies are increasingly hiring for non-tech positions. And, interestingly, as tech infiltrates every aspect of our lives, non-tech companies find themselves clamoring for tech talent to add to their team.

Here’s how tech hiring is shifting in 2019 and beyond.

Tech Companies Hiring Non-Tech Positions

According to research conducted by Glassdoor, 43% of all open jobs at tech employers were for non-technical roles in 2018. This included sales account executives, project managers, operations managers, financial analysts and marketing managers. But the roles can include any corporate positions required to build infrastructure in a company.

The good news for candidates is that you don’t have to be technologically savvy to take advantage of the cool perks and benefits many tech companies offer. And it is an exciting, ever-changing industry – if that’s something that interests you. Pay is usually competitive too.

Non-Tech Companies Hiring Tech Positions

Because technology is a part of every business operation – from marketing automation and data analysis to financial recordkeeping and talent acquisition – there are a growing number of tech jobs at non-tech companies.

It may be your dream to work at the Googles and Facebooks of the world, but there are tons of opportunities at other companies (that may not operate in the business of tech). Taking a tech job with a non-tech company may help you gain experience in the field if the tech space is new to you. Sometimes, it’s nice to be one of the few at the company with superstar-like skills. You can bring a lot of value to a non-tech company.

Additionally, the culture at a tech company may not be for everyone. They have a reputation for long hours and a competitive culture – and that might not be what motivates you. It’s better to find something that’s a good fit than what sounds like a neat job at a dinner party.
