A recent survey from Microsoft states that people spend 5.6 hours a week on average in meetings and 71% of American workers said that the meetings they participate in “aren’t very productive.” There is no perfect length for a meeting, but both short and long meetings can equally satisfy a group when the time is used productively.
That said, don’t waste time with meaningless meetings – there are already enough of those. Instead, plan ahead using these four strategies:
- Move information gathering and sharing into pre-work
- Create a more focused agenda
- Use tight scheduling and strict adherence to timers
- Make shorter meetings an explicit goal
